30in30 #6 is not a rant. I think...
This was actually a great weekend. The spawn is in town this month which makes everything go ever so much better.

Started out going to a going away party for my friend Karl who just finished nursing school and is relocating to Florida. Lots of beer and lots of cool people. Got involved in a tech conversation with Karl's Dad who retired after a career in IT. pretty cool.

Yesterday was the birthday and my favorite bar and grill, The Vortex had sent me a coupon for free chow so was i all over that. I had the Double Coronary with Tater Tots and a piece of fried cheesecake. First time I ever tried the culinary insanity that is the Double Coronary.

For the Vortex Virgins reading this:

DOUBLE CORONARY BURGER
Topped with two fried eggs, four slices of American
cheese, and 5 slices of bacon, with two grilled cheese
sandwiches replacing the buns.

I horrified my dining companions by cleaning my plate readily. Not much room for alcohol on top of all that so it was a relatively sober birthday. Complete and total tee-totaling when compared to the night before.

Today was an Illuminati game at my place and I managed to extend my unprecedented winning streak for yet another game. Illuminati is a regular card game based on the most ludicrous of conspiracy theories interacting on a table top. Originally there was to be a DnD3.5 game today but our druid has a comrade moving in from out of town so we cancelled. The spawn wanted to try Illuminati while he is in town anyway and enough of the regular players were up for cards so it all worked out. He was exposed to a "never ending wave of retard stoners quoting "Zeitgeist" as gospel" while in Texas and believed it would make the humor implicit in the game all the more amusing.

Started off by Texan-rigging a way to vent my "window unit" in to the attic. Worked great. Actually chilled a decent portion of the house to 72 and cut off at one point. The game started badly for me. I went last which is rough in Illuminati and I was playing Bavaria with only weak cards coming out. Bavaria specializes in powerful cards so it really looked like I was fucked. I started playing a spoiler strategy ignoring my own development just to slow down the lead runners. Did it well enough to narrow the lead and then a surprise trade with [info]fighting_fifi handed the two of us a shared win.

Hell of a game to close out a hell of a weekend.

30in30 #5 flailing about and metablogging
Well updating seems to be working as far as killing interest in this page. The top hit for "Bart Bailey" is now the CEO of some GPS outfit called 3001. Surely a more interesting character then myself. Good job Bart. I'm proud of you. You are the one other Bart Bailey on my cool list. Keep up the good work.

Still #2 is a lot more attention then a a guy whose writing style varies between ranting and ranting insanely. So on the why is this blog impressing the google cluster front I have theories.

1. The comments i made about the grim meathook future a few 30in30's ago. link It is a pretty popular meme and it did attract the attention of the meme's originator

2. People have been mistaking this for a blog written by the GPS CEO cat. If so this is not the case; hr people hiring for gps positions and corporate spies begone!

3. I am being targeted by the nefarious evil doers who's villainous plans I have thwarted using my knowledge of internetworking.

in other news I am 112 today and celebrating at the vortex 7ish.

30in30 #4 Greetings from hotlanta
btw i hate the word hotlanta. This isn't going to be much of an update tonight even though from my perspective it's my best post yet. I live in an old house downtown. The central heating and air was put in many years after the house was built and it is prohibitively expensive to run and maintain and completely busted now. So I installed a window unit tonight and it is sweet. However it is not in the same room as my box. Therefore I am getting the fuck off the internet. Tune in tomorrow for another exciting episode of the artist formerly known as the man.

30in30 #3 Gun Barrels full of folding green
/me has read his little red book. Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun and what not. That's changing though. The Bankers pulled off the biggest stick up in the history of the nation without a single cheap handgun. I don't care how many guns you have in your rack or what your rank is in the US military you are just as fucked as any rabid peacenik. You could argue that the biggest guns in the world are backing the domestic financial industry.

I don't buy it. I don't dispute that physical violence is the most effective dispute resolution tool in the history of life I'm just saying it's ineffective against the kind of shell game the financial sector plays on everyone and that is all i have got on the topic. queue the gratuitous quote.

"This is a war universe. War all the time. That is its nature. There may be other universes based on all sorts of other principles, but ours seems to be based on war and games."

30in 30 #2 Star Trek
The new Star Trek flick is a damn fine action movie. I saw it for the second time time yesterday and I enjoyed it. Nevertheless I am here today to pronounce the franchise deader than fried chicken. Sure they will make more movies and sure I will go see them. This does not change the fact that Gene Roddenberry is dead and his vision has followed him.

One of the most ancient disputes in geek culture is the Star Wars vs Star Trek thing. Sure lots of geeks like them both. I like them both myself. But its one of those things you just have to pick a side on. You are either a Star Wars geek or a Star Trek Geek or your geekhood is questionable. Me, I cant remember a time before I was a star Trek geek and what really made the franchise for me was the ethos. The Federation was not just more technically advanced then base reality it was more ethically advanced.

After the second viewing I am pretty certain this aspect of the franchise is completely absent from the new movie and honestly I do not see it being returning to any mainstream releases. It is symptomatic of a larger problem with our economy. Anything progressive and profitable is going to attract the business types who will start running things banker style and destroy all the value in the process. They can not show a federation that is more moral then our own culture for fear of offending potential viewers.

We will never again see a video offering from Star Trek like Let That Be Your Last Battlefield and it breaks my geeky little heart. Granted the message "racism is fucking ignorant" is not progressive by today's standards, but it was actually controversial in 1969.Don't get me wrong. I lead with the statement that it was a good flick and I meant that. Every bit as good as "A New Hope" or "Die Hard". I can live with this new Star Trek and enjoy it, but it's not my father's Star Trek and this is the opposite of progress.

So can anyone out there correct me? Was there some point in the new film where the Federation's moral fiber lived up to the shining example that has inspired geeks for more than 4 decades?

30in30 #1 I'm Bart Bailey who the fuck are you?
"Insights, anecdotes, and pictures will follow as soon as i get home to Atlanta and catch up on my rest."

or maybe not.

So I remembered 30in30 before June was over this year and decided to give it another a shot. I am way out of practice on the whole blogging thing so I doubt I can actually hit 30 readable posts prior to the 30th but I am giving it a shot.

There is an entry some ways back about why I first started doing Livejournal and to synopsize it had nothing to do with a desire to blog. More like to socialize. Early on without much conscious thought an intent was formed to not discuss my life in the meat world here. Mcluhan said that we name and divide things in order to control them. I believed that then, I still do today. So I felt it prudent to have my musings here seem unrelated to the Bart walking around base reality.

I failed in this intent. Earlier this year I noticed that google searches for "Bart Bailey" turned up references to Bartgroks. Several pages back mind you, but I was still concerned. I had never seen references to anything to do with me come up on a Google search of my name and I liked it that way. My initial reaction was to delete my profile info. I meant to set my entries to private as well. Earlier this week I googled myself again and lo and behold this blog was the #2 hit.

Disappointment set in. What can be wrong with all the other Bart Bailey's out there that I generate more interest than them while trying not to? Browsing to the page myself I noticed that I had not set the old entries private. Around about this time I remembered 30in30 and had a decent idea for a first post and here we are.

My last post was 14 months ago, I have completely neglected Livejournal in the intervening months and yet if the Google cluster is to be believed this blog has acquired some sort of audience. Well maybe updating will kill it. As of now this is the top hit on a search for my real name.

Hereafter all expectation of anonymity is abandoned. I am so running with this. My name is Bart Bailey I am a male Caucasian who was born in Bowie Texas. The DOB the state has is 6-13-67 although I continue to maintain I was actually born 70 years earlier. It amuses me to do so.

1 down lets see how many more of these I have in me.

Greetings From Gurgaon
As many of you know I know I am 15 days in to a 20 day expedition to India for work. Currently I am sitting in the lobby of new hotel in a Dehli suburb called Gurgaon. The hotel is the Indian version of a US econo-lodge and they just got their internet working! The suburb of gurgaon is basically one huge industrial park. It has been one hell of an experience. Insights, anectdotes, and pictures will follow as soon as i get home to Atlanta and catch up on my rest.

I went to see my first baseball game today. I thought it was going to be boring. It was a work get-together thing that I really did not want to go to but, it was actually A lot of fun. The Braves played the Phillies and despite being down 8-2 in the 8th they scored 7 unanswered points and won. Work paid for food. I could have gotten some free beer as well but I passed on that. It was to early for alcohol. I like to spend the early hours of my day raising my blood caffeine levels.

Thinking about taking my son to games now.

*** Third day of Red wine and green tea instead of coffee and beer. The wine for beer substitution is no big deal but the lack of java is rough. I am drinking some chicory tea right now just to get a taste of some vaguely coffee-like something. I wonder how this stuff tastes iced.

***DOA: Dead or Alive, the long-delayed action flick based on the long-running Dead or Alive fighting franchise, bombed spectacularly this weekend in its American debut, grossing an estimated $232,000 and appearing on only 505 screens.

They should have done a DOA beach volleyball movie instead.

***No work for my employer today. I cooked a lot and cleaned a little. I drove some but never left 30307. Which btw is a very tiny Zip Code. I am starting to gauge how well my week went by how much I have to drive. Only Partially but it is a criteria now. I live for the days when I can get away with out driving at all. My sense of balance is to poor to ride a bicycle or I would be using one to acheive this goal already. I might have stated this last year but eventually I want to only drive occasionally.

Our Technology is growing smaller we are becoming more intimate with it and soon will we merge.

That's one of the cyberpunk credos and one of the one's that has always fascinated the most. One of the books im reading right now as I have mentioned recently is Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond. One of the points he makesis that the transition to agriculture was gradual. IT's making me consider that old credo in a new light.

I was gonna write more but then I had a last minute disaster.

Watch the video

"At one point, when he mentioned that the United States has the highest rate of drug users in the world" i wonder if people like that think about the fact that we have a 'war on drugs' and yet that is the case, if they do not see the disparities in reality. When you say we have the highest rate and its a problem thats supposedly been tackled for like the last 20 years or whatever, and its not going away, at some point id figure youd ask "i wonder what we're doing wrong, maybe just saying drugs are bad mmkay isnt working"
